Nigeria’s Electricity Generation Drops by Over 16% in One Week

Adaobi Rhema Oguejiofor

Nigeria’s electricity generation has dropped by 16.4 percent on a week-on-week basis from 4,187.6 megawatts (MW) recorded last week Thursday to 3,501.20 MW this week.

Reports indicate that the situation happened as a result of many factors, including the poor state of plants and low gas supply to thermal plants.

This development has pushed the electricity distribution companies (Discos) to embark on load shedding in order to be able to spread the limited electricity to many at different times.

This comes as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said that eleven Discos have filed an application for rate review with the Commission.

According to NERC, the request for rate review is premised on the need to incorporate changes in the  macroeconomic parameters and other factors affecting the quality of service, operations and sustainability of the companies.
