Former Senator Abubakar Girei has joined the chorus of voices urging President Bola Tinubu to reverse several controversial economic policies, calling them unsustainable in their current form.
In a press briefing in Yola, Girei said the government’s actions—though well-intentioned—are hurting Nigerians. “That policy needs immediate reversal, among others like the exchange rate and fuel price,” he stated, referring to the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
He added that the effects were personal. “There’s hardship—no doubt. I’m personally affected; I can’t even turn on my AC,” he revealed, emphasizing the weight of the reforms on middle-class households.
However, Girei maintained optimism in Tinubu’s leadership, calling him “a listening and pragmatic president.” He cited examples of responsiveness, including the recent N1.5 trillion agricultural fund and improved security budgeting.
“We recommended increased funding for security, and he delivered,” Girei said. “That’s a listening president.”
While urging patience with the ongoing reforms, he warned that the administration must avoid alienating the public with policies that appear detached from reality.
He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s eventual course correction. “By 2027, many changes will happen, and APC will secure another victory,” Girei projected.
His comments reflect growing political pressure on the presidency to balance reform with social protection.
