Vice-President Kashim Shettima has commissioned a new 7.5MVA distribution injection substation in Maiduguri, Borno State, aimed at enhancing power supply to Borno State University and surrounding communities.
The project was delivered by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and was inaugurated as part of activities marking the Eid celebrations. Emmanuel Ojor, Head of Corporate Communications and External Relations at NDPHC, made the announcement in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Ojor, the infrastructure forms part of the company’s Distribution Intervention Projects and includes a 1×7.5MVA 33/11kV injection substation, 3 kilometres of 33kV transmission line, 2.5 kilometres of 11kV distribution line, 2.5 kilometres of low-tension line, and three 500KVA distribution transformers.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vice-President Shettima, who also chairs the board of NDPHC, described the facility as a significant milestone in delivering on President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for the power sector.
He noted that the reforms being implemented are designed to ensure universal electricity access through focused projects such as this, led by the NDPHC.
Managing Director of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, said the new substation reflects the company’s strategic role in addressing infrastructure gaps across Nigeria’s power sector.
“We are here today to hand over a special intervention project to the distribution company that will manage and operate this asset.
“This 7.5MVA substation is a clear demonstration of our mandate to strengthen power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. Our aim is to deliver stable, quality electricity right to the end users,” she stated.
Adighije added that the project reinforces NDPHC’s alignment with the federal government’s agenda to promote energy access and inclusion, especially for communities that have long been underserved.
Executive Director, Networks, at NDPHC, Bello Babayo, explained that the substation would allow for the evacuation of 6MW of electricity to customers in the area, significantly improving power supply.
“The university community in particular stands to benefit from a stable, reliable, and efficient electricity supply. We always stress that increased generation must be matched by equally strong distribution systems.
“This project helps bridge that gap and will support both industrial and commercial growth in this zone,” Babayo said.
Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company, Abdulrahman Isa, commended NDPHC and the Federal Government for the intervention. He acknowledged the critical role played by NDPHC in reinforcing the infrastructure necessary to deliver improved electricity services.
“NDPHC has remained a dependable development partner, consistently contributing to the generation, transmission, and distribution assets that help us serve our customers better,” Isa said.
