Shell Supplies 400mw of Gas Equivalent to Nigerian Market

By YANGE IKYAA

Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) has achieved the supply of gas to industrial and commercial customers in Nigeria, which has been estimated at an equivalent of 400 megawatts of energy.

The company has also said it is targeting to improve its gas supply volumes to the Nigerian market to the tune of 1 billion SCF, focusing especially on power, as well as on renewables and energy solutions for industries and for commercial customers.

Elohor Aiboni, who is the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), made this known Wednesday in Abuja while participating in a panel session at the 2022 Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference in Abuja.

According to her, “so far, we have supplied an equivalent of 400 megawatts of energy when it comes to gas-generated power. And when you talk of powering lives, this is where my smiles come on and you will understand why shortly.”

Valuechain also learnt that (SNEPCo) and SNG have put together a company which is called AllOn. The company is helping close the access to energy gap because in the country where a lot of communities don’t have light.

AllOn is focused on lighting up these communities and is it increasingly going into investment collaborations with renewable energy companies that also focus on solar in order to close the energy gap in Nigeria.

Valuecahin findings indicate that in 2021 alone, AllOn facilitated 45,000 off-grid connections in 2021, and in 2022, the company is looking forward to ramping up that number to 75,000.

Yet, the Shell MD assured that “if you ask me what is the long-term plan five years from now, I will tell you that we are looking at almost half a million.”

She further also explained that the energy transition journey is not a sprint, it is a marathon, and that all Nigerians have a part to play in the marathon, no matter how small.

Her words: “Be it in our consumption pattern, be it in our supply pattern, every single one of us in this country can do something. It’s not just the government, it’s not just the industry, even uncertified individuals, we have a role to play.

“I remember in 2019, I was going for a site visit with a senior executive that just visited Nigeria, and we were going to one of the remote locations, and as we passed, I was wondering what he was looking at. He will turn left and turn right, and he said to me it’s broad day light, why do you leave your lights on in Nigeria?“So, we all have a role to play in that, and you will agree with me that the change has started with the metering in our houses now. When we started installing meters, a lot of people started putting off ACs, they started putting off heaters, they all stopped using dryers to dry their clothes, that change is already happening, so every single one of us in this country have our part to play.”
