According to reports by ARISE News, former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has said he is ready to explain his actions while in office as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) continues its investigation into top officials of the oil company.
Kyari, who led NNPC from 2019 until his removal by President Bola Tinubu on April 2, 2025, took to social media to respond to recent rumors. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said he was not arrested by the EFCC and that such reports were false and misleading.
“I served not only my country but also God,” Kyari wrote. “I’m happy to account for my stewardship.”
The EFCC is currently looking into the alleged misuse of public funds by Kyari, former Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajiya, and 12 other NNPC officials. The investigation focuses on how billions of dollars were spent, especially on the repair of government-owned refineries that have failed to work properly.
Several other former top officials are also under scrutiny. These include ex-NNPC GMD Abubakar Lawal Yar’Adua, former Port Harcourt refinery boss Ibrahim Onoja, and former Warri refinery head Dikko Ahmed, among others. The EFCC has asked the current NNPC leadership to provide details on their roles.
According to documents seen by THISDAY, the anti-corruption agency has also asked for information on officials like former CFO Isiaka Abdulrazaq and several others connected to past refinery projects.
In his statement, Kyari said he is currently on a well-deserved rest after working for NNPC for 34 years, including nearly 6 years as its GCEO. He said he had very little time off during his career and is now using this opportunity to rest.
Kyari stressed that he served with honesty and the fear of God, saying that even if he doesn’t answer to people now, he believes he will one day answer to God. He welcomed any opportunity to explain his service to the Nigerian people.
He also warned that false information, such as the rumor of his arrest, can damage Nigeria’s reputation, especially with investors and the global community. Kyari urged the media to confirm stories before publishing, especially on sensitive matters like investigations.
The EFCC is still carrying out its investigation, and if any wrongdoing is found, those involved may face charges.
For now, Kyari remains confident and says he is ready to cooperate with the authorities.
