Fish killed as Kano tanneries flush waste into River Wudil

Various species of fish of different sizes have been killed in Kano by industrial waste released over the weekend into River Wudil.

Alhaji Lawan Wudil, an official in Wudil District Head’s palace told Daily Trust on Thursday that it was the first time in four years since the issue of water pollution and its attendant effects on aquatic life was taken up by the authorities.

He said the effluence from tanneries in Kano was released into the river around 12am on Saturday last week, killing various fish species in the water.

He said residents of the town trooped into the river for fishing out of ignorance, not minding the health implication of consuming the fish killed by the poisons from the industries.ADVERTISEMENT

“This is a very serious health concern to us here in Wudil because we depend on this river for our livelihood in various aspects.

“Apart from serving as source of water for domestic use for many families, some residents who had inherited fishing as a business from their fore-fathers had been forced out of their age long occupation because of the indiscriminate waste disposal by these industries” he said.

The effluence from Challawa and Panshekara, wash through Maidille, Sabuwar-Gandu into Kumbotso then Wudil River.
