Cultivating the Future with FG’s N1 Billion Boost for Agricultural Education

By Ese Ufuoma

In a strategic move to improve Nigeria’s agricultural education and address food security challenges, the Federal Government has announced a N1 billion investment in selected polytechnics and universities with agriculture-focused programs. This initiative is set to commence in the second quarter of 2025 and aims to enhance the practical training and research capabilities of these institutions, thereby equipping students with the skills necessary to drive innovation in the agricultural sector.

During an inspection tour of Yaba College of Technology’s (YABATECH) Epe Campus, Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Alausa highlighted the critical role of education in national economic growth. He emphasised that the investment would support institutions in establishing mechanised farms and engaging in livestock farming, providing students with invaluable hands-on experience. This effort aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to improve food security and boost food production nationwide.

“Nigeria is rich in arable land and natural resources, but we must harness the innovative potential of our tertiary institutions to revolutionise the agricultural sector,” Alausa stated. “This sector could become the cornerstone of the nation’s economy, and universities and colleges must play an essential role in achieving this vision.”

YABATECH, a 77-year-old institution renowned for promoting vocational and technical education, is among the beneficiaries of this investment. The college has been encouraged to lead the development of innovative solutions that empower students and researchers to make meaningful contributions to the agricultural sector. The institution’s leadership has expressed commitment to aligning its academic programs with the national agenda, highlighting ongoing initiatives such as partnerships with industry leaders and the establishment of a demonstration farm for practical agricultural learning.

This investment comes at a time when Nigeria is struggling with rising food insecurity. By focusing on agricultural education and practical training, the federal government aims to create a new generation of skilled professionals capable of driving growth and innovation in the sector. The initiative is expected to not only enhance food production but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth, contributing to the overall development of the nation.

As the program rolls out, stakeholders in the education and agriculture sectors will be keenly observing its impact on addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s food security and its broader economic implications.
