Adokiye Tombomieye FNSE Chief Operating Officer, Upstream – NNPC

Adokiye Tombomieye, a graduate of Chemical Engineering from the Rivers State University of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt possesses almost 30 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry spanning through Operations, Engineering, Project Management and Commercial Business Management. His expertise in these areas is highly evident in his trajectory of progressively attaining key positions.

He commenced his career in 1991 at Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL) as a Production Engineer, where he made outstanding contributions to the operations of the Polyethylene Plant for about 14 years.
Almost a decade into his career in NNPC, he was appointed as the Acting Deputy Manager of Polyethylene/Butene-1 Plants in recognition of his excellent performance. He excelled during the Performance Guarantee Test (P.G.T) using the Modified Reactor Agitator as this feat was achieved despite the reduction of the Technical back-up staff (TBS) by ninety percent.

Following EPCL, he was seconded to Brass LNG Ltd, where he further gained vast experience for over 10 years, by providing technical support to the Gas and Power Directorate, before he attained the position of a Manager.

In 2015, Adokiye was appointed the General Manager, Commercial in the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD), which transitioned his career into the upstream sector of the industry. His competence, loyalty and dedication to NNPC paved the path for his promotion to the position of Group General Manager, COMD, in 2019. He also served on the board of various subsidiaries within the corporation, such as NPDC, PPMC, Retail, Duke Oil and NIDAS, where he made significant contributions to boards’ discussions.

And in July 2020, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer, Upstream, NNPC
As part of his achievements, Adokiye Tombomieye earned a Certificate of Distinction for Facilitators’ Prize for being the best in Effective Presentation in Chief Officers Management Development Programme (COMDP) Course 039 (2006).

He was also the officer in charge of Management and Operation of the Corporation’s Direct Sales/Direct Purchase (DSDP) from April 2016 – June 2019. This is the emplacement and implementation of the direct sale of crude oil and direct purchase of petroleum products which provided seamless supply of petroleum products to the country and led to an overall cost savings of over $2billion.

Adokiye was part of the team that negotiated an appropriate pricing framework for Egina Crude after First Oil and during the Trial Marketing Period (TMP). This negotiation secured over $1 per barrel price advantage over the earlier proposed price by the Terminal Operator.
He was instrumental to the development of the strategy for expansion of Domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Utilization from local sources.

He also championed the emplacement of processes for the recovery of legacy demurrage costs from Crude oil and Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) owed to the Corporation by Terminal Operators.

In recent times, despite the unprecedented events that emanated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was a leading force in the implementation of the Honourable Minister of State Petroleum Resources’ (HMSPR) strategy on OPEC production cut.

He is a self-driven, seasoned and highly efficient chemical engineer, with broad range of proficiency and competence across the value chain of the Oil and Gas industry. An amiable personality, with deep appetite for details, he is an excellent manager of men and materials.

In recognition of his selfless service to the development of engineering profession in Nigeria, Adokiye Tombomieye was bestowed with the fellowship of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) recently in a colourful event that was attended by majority of his colleagues including his boss, the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
