Rebuild Refineries to Cushion Negative Effect of Subsidy Removal, ASUU tells FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to revamp the nation’s refineries in order to reduce the negative impact of fuel subsidy removal on citizens.

The Union’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, gave this advice on Wednesday at the maiden public lecture and groundbreaking ceremony of its Secretariat at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University (AE-FUNAI) in Ikwo Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi State.

Osodeke explained that the lecture, which was titled “Reinventing Nigerian Universities for Research and Development: The ASUU Perspective,” was organized in order to educate the public on the importance of research for nation-building.

He advised the Federal Government to revive the refineries in the nation, as they will ensure sustainable development not only in the oil and gas industry, but also in all other sectors.

In his own words, “in speaking about fuel subsidy removal, we are an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and this implies that whatever action they are taking on this nationwide issue will be supported by us. Our next action depends on NLC.

“In fact, we don’t believe in fuel subsidies. There is no subsidy in this country. You cannot be exporting crude oil for the past 70 years and still not be able to refine the crude oil and sell it to your people. Sell it to your people at the Nigerian rate and not in dollars. That is why there is a need to rebuild our refineries and prioritize the nation’s education for sustainable development.”
