According To Vanguard, October 19, 2025, the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) has announced plans to unveil a more adaptable modular refinery as part of its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s local refining capacity and advancing technological self-reliance in the oil and gas sector.
The institute revealed that the project aims to promote research-driven innovation, reduce dependence on imported refined products, and serve as a practical learning model for students and industry professionals.
According to PTI Principal and Chief Executive, Dr. Henry Adimula, the refinery will not only enhance hands-on training for students but also serve as a prototype for small-scale refineries across the country. He emphasized that the modular design would allow for scalability and adaptability to meet different refining needs.
Dr. Adimula noted that the new refinery aligns with the Federal Government’s renewed focus on promoting local content and energy sustainability. He also highlighted that PTI’s engineers and researchers are working closely with key industry stakeholders to ensure the refinery meets international safety and operational standards.
“The Petroleum Training Institute is ready to take the lead in technology-driven solutions that can help Nigeria achieve energy independence. Our modular refinery project will serve as a benchmark for innovation and practical learning,” Adimula stated.
He further explained that the project will also support the training of skilled manpower required to operate and maintain modular refineries nationwide, thereby contributing to job creation and knowledge transfer within the oil and gas industry.
Industry observers believe that the PTI initiative could complement ongoing efforts by the private sector, including the Dangote Refinery and other modular refinery projects, to end fuel importation and ensure energy security in Nigeria.
