Nigeria Still Owing IMF $590.78M, Will be Paid in Installments Between 2026 & 2029 – Salako

The Labour Party Spokesperson for Lagos State, Ife Salako, has refuted widespread claims circulating online that President Bola Tinubu has cleared all of Nigeria’s debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), labeling such reports as misinformation.

In a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account Ife Sakako criticized what he described as deliberate propaganda, clarifying that Nigeria still owes the IMF and that recent repayments only extend to a certain point.

“Because I asked for good news, they’ve been tagging me on a report that Tinubu CLEARED ALL IMF LOAN. ANOTHER PROPAGANDA!!!” he wrote, responding to social media users who had cited a report as evidence of the President’s fiscal achievement.

Salako emphasized that while repayments have been made, they do not amount to full settlement of Nigeria’s IMF obligations. “Nigeria, not Tinubu, has only paid IMF loan up until 2025,” he stated, stressing that the repayment is part of a scheduled plan.

He further revealed that the country still has an outstanding balance with the IMF. “Nigeria is still owing IMF $590.78 million which will be paid in installments between 2026 and 2029,” Salako noted, directly addressing the core of the misinformation.

He acknowledged the partial repayment as a positive step but expressed frustration at the alleged misrepresentation of facts.
