National Grid Partially Collapses, plunging many Nigerians into darknes

On February 12, 2025, Nigeria experienced a partial collapse of its national power grid, leaving many parts of the country without electricity. The blackout, which occurred at 11:34 AM local time, marked the first significant grid failure of the year.

Multiple power distribution companies, including the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), confirmed the disruption in a posts shared by Channels TV, on X (formerly Twitter).

According to IKEDC, the outage affected all of its feeders, causing widespread power loss across its service areas. The company assured customers that efforts to restore the supply were underway, with ongoing collaboration with key stakeholders to address the issue. The company stated, “Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” indicating a concerted effort to bring the grid back online as quickly as possible.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the outage, offering similar updates to its customers. “Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” the company posted. Like IKEDC, AEDC also assured customers that power restoration was in progress, though it noted that the process would be gradual. The company emphasized that it was working closely with relevant authorities to stabilize the grid and fully restore electricity across affected regions.

This grid collapse has added to the long-standing challenges of Nigeria’s power sector, where frequent blackouts and power instability have been a major concern for residents and businesses. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the country’s power infrastructure, these disruptions continue to highlight the fragility of the national grid, with many calling for comprehensive reforms to enhance its reliability and efficiency.
