The country representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Mozambique, Alexis Meyer-Cirkel, has said that the push to limit gas production in the country is “not sensible”.
In a briefing, Meyer-Cirkel stated that countries like Mozambique cannot pay for the challenges brought on b y the emissions of developed countries. The IMF has always promoted gas and other big resource projects in Mozambique.
“I think that this discussion, preventing Mozambique from developing this wealth, disproportionately penalizes a country that has not contributed to the creation of the problem and that is a poorer country,” he said.
According to him, the dependence on resources by resource-rich countries had limited their response to difficult situations like the recent pandemic. He added that African resource countries have a post-COVID-19 loss prediction of 2.9% compared to non-resource countries expected to grow their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 3.8%.
