Nigeria imported over 263,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) between January and June 2021.

According to Hawilti’s latest Sector Watch on Nigeria’s LPG industry for the second quarter of 2021 (Q2’21), 52 per cent of the importation was delivered in Q2.

The report also stated that 81 per cent of Nigeria’s LPG in the first half (H1) of the year came from the United States.

“LPG imports increased but at a lesser pace than domestic supply, registering a QoQ (quarter-on-quarter) growth of 6.3 per cent. The United States continued to be the main exporter of LPG into Nigeria, representing almost 81 per cent of all LPG imported between January and June 2021,” it said.

Meanwhile, Lagos State has continued to be the central hub for LPG delivery and trading in Nigeria, as the Petroleum Wharf Apapa (PWA), which is owned and operated by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Apapa took the lion’s share of the LPG supplies that were delivered between January and June.

“Three of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)’s jetties at Apapa in Lagos handled a third of all LPG supplies delivered into Nigeria in the first half of 2021: the Petroleum Wharf Apapa (PWA), New Oil Jetty (NOJ) and Bulk Oil Plant (BOP). Additional jetties in Lagos handled the rest of the traffic, especially these of Lister Oil, RainOil and TechnoOil. The rest of the traffic was handled out of Delta State with the jetties of Prudent Energy and Matrix Energy,” the report read.

A total of 161,992 metric tons (MT) of LPG were delivered to the three NPA jetties in the first half of the year, the report revealed.

Valuechain reports that there are nine jetties in the country.

Under the discharged LPG at the Nigerian jetties, the PWA took a delivery of 47,119mt in Q1 and 61,997mt in Q2, making it a total of 109,116mt of LPG in H1.
