Many people were jolted last week when the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva said an alternative fuel is coming, which would be cheaper and easier to use than PMS the normal engine fuel.
However, the claim is real and true as the alternative fuel which goes by the name CNG [compressed Natural Gas] is made by compressing natural gas under very high pressure of about 25 mega pascal.
Natural gas which is an heterogeneous mixture of methane and a few other compounds is found abundantly in Nigeria and thus sourcing for the resources would never be a problem as Nigeria has one of the largest gas reserves in the world which was previously under utilized.
CNG is far cheaper than petrol as automobile fuel, for instance the Managing Director of NIPCO plc, the only station currently selling the product in Nigeria, Sanjay Teotia said if one liter of PMS would cover 8km, one SCM of CNG would cover 12km.
