The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has moved to calm the nerves of Nigerians, particularly those in northern Nigeria, over the proposed tax reform bills. According to FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, the tax reforms are not targeted at any specific region, including northern Nigeria according to vanguard.
Adedeji emphasized that the reforms are designed to streamline the tax system, making it more efficient and effective. He assured Nigerians that the FIRS will engage in extensive sensitization and education to ensure that the public understands the reforms and their implications.Speaking on the sidelines of a ‘Roundtable Discussion on the Tax Reform Bills’, the Chairman, FIRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Tayo Koleosho, said, the roundtable is to make it clear that the tax reform bills is for the benefit of all Nigerians, and there is no hidden agenda about the tax reforms by the Tinubu-led administration, which the focus is on the rich and not impoverish low earning Nigerians.
Meanwhile, earlier in his welcome address, he explained that it is to ensure that Nigerians not only understand the tax reform bills, but also embrace their importance, therefore, Nigerian economic growth and national development rely heavily on an efficient and transparent tax system, and that the tax reform bill is designed to streamline tax processes, close revenue gaps, and foster a more business-friendly environment.
The FIRS aims to dispel misconceptions and fears surrounding the tax reforms, promoting a clearer understanding of the bills and their benefits. By doing so, the agency hopes to build trust and cooperation among Nigerians, ultimately enhancing the country’s tax system.
