$2.9bn Refinery Fraud: Presidency source reveals what Tinubu said

There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is actively overseeing the ongoing investigations into the past leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

According to Leadership, this information was gathered from several official reports and private briefings that the President has received, particularly over the last 23 months since he assumed office.

A source who directly communicated with the President on this matter confirmed the developments to Empowered Newswire over the weekend.

While repeating what the president said, the source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “Mr. President had made it clear that there is no way the federal government under his watch would not have to find out about many of the well-known mismanagement and misappropriation of resources and funds in the NNPC. I will certainly deal with them.”

The source further explained that President Tinubu became aware of the deep-rooted corruption within the nation’s oil company much earlier than anticipated. Upon realizing the scale of the issue, he was determined to take action and initiate a cleanup of the NNPC.

However, he was advised and held back by a few close allies who believed that the newly appointed board, under the leadership of Chief Pius Akinyelure, would need more time to properly address the situation.

When President Tinubu announced the appointment of the Pius Akinyelure-led board for the NNPC, he had other options available, but he ultimately decided to proceed with Akinyelure due to his extensive experience in the Oil and Gas sector.

Furthermore, the former top leadership of the NNPC had assured the President that they would work towards reviving some of the country’s publicly owned refineries, but requested additional time to make significant progress.
