Unlocking Dormant Oil Fields: No Going Back – Minister

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has reaffirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to unlocking dormant oil fields as a crucial strategy to boost the nation’s oil production and ensure energy security, as reported by The Sun.

He emphasized that this initiative is a non-negotiable part of the government’s energy agenda.

During a visit to TotalEnergies’ Headquarters in Paris and their Research Institute in Pau, Senator Lokpobiri highlighted the importance of reactivating inactive and untapped oil assets.

The visit was part of ongoing engagements between the government and industry operators to facilitate the unlocking of Nigeria’s energy resources.

A statement from Nneamaka Okafor, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, noted that Lokpobiri explained how President Bola Tinubu has issued clear directives to all industry players, urging them to reactivate dormant oil fields without delay.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with TotalEnergies’ proactive steps toward unlocking their inactive assets.

During the visit to Pau, Lokpobiri was briefed on advanced exploration and monitoring technologies at the institute’s Smart Room and support center.

At TotalEnergies’ Paris headquarters, discussions focused on regulatory frameworks and operational support to assist the company in unlocking selected oil blocks awarded in recent bid rounds.

Nicolas Terraz, Group President of Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, expressed the company’s eagerness to restart production in the strategic assets, welcoming Nigeria’s strong regulatory support.

Lokpobiri assured that the Federal Government would continue to provide policy, financial, and technical facilitation to operators.

“President Tinubu has made it explicit; operators must reactivate dormant assets. We are driving this mission with every dedication required, and I am glad to see TotalEnergies taking the bold steps to unlock their inactive and untapped assets,” the Minister said.
