According to Daily Post, published on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the inclusion of N6.44 billion for a presidential support group for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Nigeria’s budget.
Atiku, in a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, questioned the rationale behind the allocation, stating that Nigeria had already been eliminated from the qualification race before the budget was presented.
He said the allocation raised questions about who proposed, approved and benefited from the expenditure.
According to Atiku, the issue was beyond a budgeting error and reflected deeper concerns about accountability and financial management.
He said the controversy reinforced fears that public funds could be allocated for purposes without clear justification.
The former vice president also demanded an independent investigation into the budget provision and the PFIPC controversy, where alleged Director-General Adeniyi Adeyemi was recently arrested over accusations bordering on forgery, fraud and impersonation.
Atiku urged authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
