Runway Excursion at Benin Airport: Lessons in Airside Safety and Operational Readiness

The runway excursion involving Enugu Air Flight 4264 at Benin Airport on July 23 has once again highlighted the fine line between effective aviation safety management and the high economic costs that accompany operational disruptions in Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector.

The Embraer E170 aircraft, registered 5N-ENR, was arriving from Lagos with 63 passengers and five crew members when it reportedly hydroplaned during landing on Runway 05, overshooting the runway and coming to rest in the safety area. Although all 68 occupants were safely evacuated without injuries, the incident immediately halted operations at Benin Airport, triggering flight cancellations, passenger disruptions and financial losses for airlines operating one of the country’s busiest regional routes.

The incident has also reignited conversations around runway infrastructure, emergency preparedness and the resilience of Nigeria’s airport system during the rainy season.

From a safety perspective, the response demonstrated measurable improvements in emergency preparedness. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) swiftly deployed its Go-Team, while airport emergency responders, military personnel and airline staff coordinated the orderly evacuation of passengers from the aircraft. Video footage circulating after the incident showed calm and disciplined passenger disembarkation, reflecting effective cabin crew training and adherence to emergency procedures. Such coordinated action prevented what could have escalated into a more serious aviation accident, underscoring the progress Nigeria has made in strengthening its emergency response capability.

However, the apparent cause of the excursion, hydroplaning, raises broader concerns about the condition of runway infrastructure at airports located within Nigeria’s high-rainfall zones. Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between an aircraft’s tyres and the runway surface, significantly reducing braking efficiency and directional control. While pilots are trained to manage such conditions, runway drainage systems and adequate surface friction remain critical defences against such occurrences.

The Benin incident has therefore renewed calls for more aggressive investment in runway grooving, improved drainage systems and routine friction coefficient testing, particularly at airports in the Niger Delta and other regions that experience prolonged seasonal rainfall. Beyond the safety dimension, the operational consequences were immediate.

Following the runway excursion, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) temporarily closed the airport to facilitate aircraft recovery operations and allow investigators to preserve evidence. The closure forced major domestic carriers, including Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines, to suspend scheduled flights into Benin, disrupting passenger travel plans and airline operations. For airlines already operating in a challenging economic environment characterised by high aviation fuel prices, foreign exchange pressures and rising maintenance costs, even a short airport closure translates into significant financial losses. Aircraft scheduled for Benin services had to be repositioned, while affected passengers required refunds, rebookings or alternative travel arrangements. Additional expenses such as crew rescheduling, aircraft utilisation disruptions and potential hotel accommodations further increased operating costs.

For Enugu Air, the impact extends beyond the immediate incident. With one aircraft undergoing technical assessment pending the outcome of investigations, fleet availability is temporarily reduced, creating scheduling pressures across other routes and placing additional strain on customer confidence.

The economic implications also extend beyond the aviation industry itself. Benin Airport serves as an important gateway for commercial activities across Edo and neighbouring Delta State, supporting business travel, government engagements and the movement of professionals working in manufacturing, agriculture and Nigeria’s energy sector. Flight disruptions therefore affect corporate productivity, supply chains and time-sensitive business operations that depend on reliable air connectivity. The incident also exposes a broader challenge confronting Nigeria’s aviation industry: the need to balance uncompromising safety protocols with rapid operational recovery.

While preserving an accident site is essential for investigators to determine the causes of an occurrence, prolonged airport closures can impose substantial economic costs. This has strengthened arguments for equipping regional airports with modern heavy-aircraft recovery equipment capable of removing disabled aircraft more quickly without compromising investigative integrity.

Equally important is public communication. Initial reports describing the occurrence as a “crash” created unnecessary anxiety before aviation authorities clarified that the aircraft had experienced a runway excursion. Industry experts say consistent terminology from regulators and airlines would improve public understanding and help maintain confidence during aviation incidents.

As the NSIB continues its investigation and FAAN completes detailed runway assessments, the Benin Airport runway excursion offers valuable lessons for Nigeria’s aviation sector. It demonstrates that while emergency response systems have improved considerably, infrastructure resilience must evolve at the same pace.

With climate variability increasing the frequency of heavy rainfall events, investments in runway drainage, anti-skid resurfacing and advanced recovery capabilities are becoming as critical as aircraft safety itself.

Ultimately, the Benin incident serves as a reminder that protecting lives remains aviation’s highest priority. Yet sustaining public confidence and ensuring the financial health of domestic airlines will require equal attention to resilient airport infrastructure, efficient operational recovery and continuous investment in airside safety systems.
