Recent Fuel Price Hike and the Suffering of Nigerians

Fuel Subsidy

In most cases, the impact has been negative, as higher fuel costs disrupt the production and distribution of goods and services across the country.

Nigeria is currently experiencing another surge in fuel prices, which several reports have linked to global tensions, including the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. The recent increase also followed an announcement by the Dangote Refinery adjusting the price of fuel per litre.

According to the refinery, the adjustment was driven by rising international costs, although it stated that it absorbed about 20 percent of the increase to reduce the burden on the local market.

Despite this measure, the development has led to higher transportation costs, increased inflation, and additional pressure on households and businesses.

Available data shows that fuel prices rose by about 52 percent between August and March 2025. More recently, prices have climbed from around ₦800 per litre to between ₦1,200 and ₦1,300 per litre, a situation that has raised concerns among Nigerians.

With the country already grappling with economic challenges, the rise in fuel prices has further driven up the cost of goods and services, including transportation.

Reports from Punch Newspapers indicated that the refinery announced a new gantry price of ₦1,175 per litre for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Other reports, including those from Daily Post Nigeria, suggest that PMS prices could approach ₦2,000 per litre, while Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, could rise to nearly ₦3,000 per litre if current conditions persist.

The consequences of these increases are already being felt across the country. Since most food items are transported from farms to markets by road, higher fuel costs inevitably lead to increased food prices.

The cost of living, which refers to the amount of money required to cover basic living expenses, therefore continues to rise.

In light of these challenges, it is essential for the government to introduce policies aimed at stabilising fuel prices and easing the economic burden on citizens.

Such measures would help ensure that living costs remain manageable for Nigerians.
