The Federal Government installed 707,765 electricity meters in the first half of 2026, a 71% jump from 412,792 meters installed in the same period of 2025, according to NERC data.
NERC said installations comprised 357,495 meters in Q1 and 350,270 meters in Q2. In contrast, only 187,161 and 225,631 meters were installed in Q1 and Q2 2025 respectively.
Of the 350,270 meters installed in Q2 2026, the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme accounted for the bulk.
The commission said 205,486 meters, representing 58.67 per cent of total installations during the quarter, were installed under DISREP.
It added that 123,833 meters were installed under the Meter Asset Provider framework, 13,028 under Metering Asset Finance, 7,643 under DisCo-financed framework and 280 under Vendor Financed framework.
Despite the surge, the metering gap remains wide.
“As of the end of June 2026, 7,743,839 out of the total 12,589,486 active registered customers in the NESI were metered, translating to a metering rate of 61.51 per cent,” NERC said.
That leaves over 4.8 million active customers without meters.
