Alhaji Sayyu Idris Dantata, the founder of MRS Oil, is a quiet billionaire powering Africa’s energy future.
He may not always be in the spotlight, but his impact on Nigeria’s energy landscape is impossible to ignore.
Born into the legendary Dantata family of Kano, Sayyu is the half-brother of Alhaji Aliko Dangote—Africa’s richest man (they have the same mother). Sayyu is a Mechanical Engineer having attended Morris Brown College, Atlanta, USA and started his career as the Director of Dangote Transport in Lagos, Nigeria.
In 1995, he founded MRS Holdings, a fully integrated and pan-African energy company. Under his leadership, MRS expanded into oil trading, shipping, storage, and retail. One of his most notable business moves came in 2009 when MRS acquired Chevron’s downstream assets in Nigeria, instantly transforming the company into a continental powerhouse with hundreds of retail outlets across Nigeria.
Beyond oil and gas, Sayyu is a strategic thinker and philanthropist. He invests heavily in education, agriculture, and healthcare, supporting initiatives that create jobs and uplift communities.
A lover of polo, he also proudly represents Nigeria in international tournaments—proving that his excellence isn’t just confined to the boardroom.
