The Federal Government, on Thursday says it posted a milestone towards expanding Nigeria’s gas infrastructure that targets strengthening domestic supply following 95 per cent completion of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline.
The disclosure was made by the Decade of Gas Secretariat during a media engagement organised in collaboration with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV) in Kano on Thursday.
Speaking at the engagement, Mr Taofeek Balogun, Workstream Lead for Infrastructure and Demand at the Decade of Gas Secretariat, said the progress on the AKK pipeline formed part of broader efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to unlock the country’s vast gas potential.
The media engagement, which brought together journalists from television, radio, print and digital platforms targets accurate reporting and public understanding of Nigeria’s gas development agenda.
Taofeek Balogun also announced the completion of the OB3 Gas Pipeline, another major infrastructure project expected to enhance the movement of gas across the country and support increased domestic utilisation.
Balogun stated that Nigeria’s proven gas reserves have risen from 208.83 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in 2023 to 215.19 TCF as of January 2026, while average gas production increased from 6.86 billion cubic feet per day (BCF/D) to approximately 7.5 BCF/D.
He said domestic gas supply had also exceeded 2 BCF/D, while about $3.5 billion in investments had been committed to four major gas projects, reflecting growing confidence in the sector.
Balogun further disclosed that government had committed N671 billion to public infrastructure, which had attracted approximately N1.6 trillion in private investment, stressing that the development of critical gas infrastructure remained central to Nigeria’s economic and energy transformation.
He said the government was also advancing cleaner energy initiatives, including the LPG programme targeting five million households by 2030 and the expansion of CNG infrastructure nationwide, with Kano emerging as a strategic clean-mobility hub in the North-West.
